(Blank) is the New Beautiful



Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with art or crafty things.

I try not to be too assertive with opinions, because I don't have a desire to start arguments on the internet--but I felt a very strong urge to put this out into the world.When I am painting or making jewelry, I play a lot of TV in the background to make me feel like I’m interacting with the outside world and a few commercials got under my skin. This inspired a rant of sorts and one question I really want to know the answer to. 

Can we stop letting conversations revolve around the way we look? 

Good or bad? Lately companies have been redefining beauty to be more inclusive, and no matter how good the intentions are this still forces us to look at our bodies and compare them to others.

Like Pantene with 'strong is beautiful'. Strong hair and strong bodies. 





All I need to do now is work out a bunch and fuel my hair. Bam! Beautiful!

Aveeno and Jennifer Aniston think healthy skin equals beautiful skin.


Does that mean that if my skin looks dry it won't be beautiful? Better slather on the lotion. 

I have to give a gentle golf clap to Walgreens for this one: 



The message at least gives me the power to define my own beauty and it's actually inclusive.

And then there was Dove with the Real Beauty Campaign telling us we are more beautiful than we think:



It's a great example of how we are too critical of ourselves, and our perception of self differs drastically from how others perceive us. I was onboard with it until one woman said, "I should be more grateful of my natural beauty." and "It impacts everything. It couldn't be more critical to your happiness."

Really? My natural beauty is critical to my happiness? I call bullshit.

Some messages floating around are more positive than others, but I’m still going to criticize a message that makes me look at my body with any sort of objectification. 

I was all for redefining beauty in the beginning. Everyone should feel confident with their bodies and minds—but when the conversation is about beauty in any form we are just given a new image to fixate on. 

Now, shifting to the commercial that just pissed me right off. Crest. 

 

And omg, nobody is going to pass the fricken 'Tissue Test'.



But back to the first commercial:

Girl 1: “Why are you deleting these photos?”
Girl 2: “Because my teeth are yellow.”
Girl 1: “Oh, yeah. They are a little yellow.”
Girl 2: (joking outrage) “Hey!”
Girl 1: “Why don’t you use a whitening toothpaste?!”

I just need to say Girl 1 is kind of a shitty friend. She should have said “Your smile is awesome! Save those pictures!”

But, I’ve been there. Looking at a picture of myself and then going “Oh, lordy! Why didn’t someone tell me I looked like that?” I ignored the happiness on my face. I ignored the memory of the moment and instead thought about the way I looked as if appearing ‘unattractive’ diminished the quality of my experiences.

If someone is trying to sell you a product by telling you it will enhance your appearance, odds are pretty good that they are just preying on your insecurities. Their goal isn’t to make you feel better about yourself. Their goal is to get your money and making you feel bad about yourself is an effective tactic.  

Scroll through Pinterest, pick up a magazine, turn on the TV, go grocery shopping, eat a brownie, go on Facebook and you will suddenly start questioning every inch of your body.

We are inundated with click bait on how to have thicker hair. How to have clearer skin. Acne gone forever! How to shape your booty. How to get rid of your muffin top. How to fix yellow nails. How to get rid of bat wings. Perfect cat eye makeup. Sculpt your cheekbones. Get whiter teeth. Shinier hair. Straighten your teeth from home. Burn more calories. Cellulite fixes. Varicose veins, shmaricose veins. Get rid of blackheads with a lemon! How to hide your wrinkles. Eliminate gray hairs. Slim down quickly! How to get the perfect tan. Stop aging. Get longer eyelashes. Blah, blah, blah...

If you can maintain your confidence after numerous sources tell you all the things ‘wrong’ with your body—tell me your secrets. Please.

Am I the only one annoyed with how things are packaged and sold to us?

If you are with me, I have a plan. I suggest that we change our perspective. I suggest that we take control of what matters. Yes, health is important. Being confident is important. Feeling good about yourself is important—but does any of this depend beauty?

No.

So, instead of saying 'blank’ is the new beautiful—can we just be awesome instead? Beauty does not have to be a part of our identity. Your best friend just dyed her hair, but she’s also going to grad school and loves her classes. Your sister gained a little bit of weight, but she’s also happy as a clam. Your mom’s grays are starting to show, but her face lights up when you come over for dinner. Your skin has been breaking out lately, but you’ve spent hours upon hours working on a huge project for work and you can’t wait to share your accomplishments with those you love. How about we stop giving power to beauty and appearances and just enjoy the moments we live in?

A sassy new hair cut can give you loads of confidence, but a bad hair day shouldn't devalue your self worth. The winter weight in my thighs may jiggle more than usual when I walk, but I'm still going to enjoy cooking dinner with my fiance and eating ALL of it. And then I'll go paint a new piece of art and rock the shit out of my lack of perfection.

Though I admit, I struggle with this every day as a still I see myself as having a lot of flaws—but we need to stop sacrificing moments of happiness just because we don’t look the way we want to. Mostly, I'm really tired of pop culture telling me how I should want to look and then selling me a product to achieve that look! 

Moral of the story, if anyone took a picture of you in one of your happiest moments, and you wanted to delete it because your teeth look yellow, your stomach wasn’t toned, or your cankles were out of control, etc.—then this one is for you:

Fuck being beautiful. Be awesome.

How I Suck at Selling My Art




As the title of this post oh so delicately suggests, I am not the best at selling my art.

My identity and skill set did not come equipped with “Sales Woman.” And unfortunately, money is not the biggest motivator for me to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve had jobs where I’d get sales commissions, and although it was a perk I was not driven to push people to buy things. In my head, I thought maybe they didn’t really need the product. Maybe they didn’t realize they were being over-charged. Who am I to force this upon someone?



Obviously, this is an issue. If I plan on making a living as an artist, it would be beneficial to sell things. Clearly, I desire to make money--I would just like to be comfortable while doing it. 

So, why am I so bad at selling my art and other creative products?

For one, I am an introvert. Talking to people is exhausting if I don’t know them and don't know what to talk to them about. It also opens the door for me to say and do awkward things, and then remember those interactions years later in painful detail. 



Two, I make the false assumption that potential customers shop like I do. I don’t like being pressured to buy anything. I do research on products before I commit to a purchase. Everything from shampoo to a couch. Hasty decisions are rarely made. Thus, I do not push other people to buy from me. 



Three, selling art is like selling a piece of yourself and it’s quite difficult for me to put a price on that.
It would be incredibly convenient for me if potential customers would say, "I value your art. Let me pay you 'x' amount." And if 'x' amount is something I would be happy with, then we both walk away feeling satisfied with the transaction.



Instead, I am often times left teetering between what I think my art is worth, and what I think people might be comfortable paying for my work. I tend to short change myself this way, but my goal is to unload my art, buy more supplies, and eat Chipotle.  I’ve been so anxious to get rid of my art that I have basically given it away at times.



To challenge my comfort zone, I displayed my work at a local art event last week. Naturally, I wanted to make the event more successful so I decided to compensate for my lackluster sales skills by trying a few new tactics. 

1. Overcome my introversion.

Introverts often cannot handle large crowds of people with only surface level interactions, but we can thrive on conversations that are more meaningful. A fellow creative person offered me the advice of “treat each transaction as a relationship.”

That is what I did.




I didn’t try to convince anyone to buy my stuff. I talked to people. I showed an interest in their experiences. I shared my techniques. I treated people as people and not as a potential sale.

Was this successful?

I had a tension headache by the end of the night and my cheeks hurt from smiling for 5 hours, but it worked.

2. Stop assuming people are like me.

I don’t meet a lot of people like me in public—so this is just a bad way for me to operate.

I decided to present myself more and do the exact opposite of how I want people to treat me. I engaged customers when they approached and put in the effort to approach them as well. I made sure to tell them I was the artist. Apparently, I don’t come off immediately as the creator. 

Once I established my artistry, the conversations kept going, and sales happened more frequently. People want to know the artist. 



Opening the dialogue and being forward with information allowed me to feel like I was creating an experience and not pushing for a sale. This even works on other fellow introverts. Just focus on making a connection meaningful.

3. Place a value on my art.

I tried something new at this event. I made a “Name Your Price” bin. I have a bunch of prints and work that I am tired of looking at. Instead of telling people what they are worth, I let them choose. To my surprise, people went for it.

Out of the majority of sales from the “Name Your Price” bin, customers paid at or above what I would have asked for.

I also settled with the fact that I will always price lower than I should, but I made it a point to clearly label all pieces with these outrageously low numbers. If you don’t put a visible price on your work, a lot of people won’t ask. They may just assume the piece isn’t for sale.



In conclusion, this was the most successful event that I have ever done, in both sales and pleasant interactions with people. The location of my display, the favorable weather conditions, and other factors definitely played into the traffic at this event, but my effort to come out of my bubble contributed to my success.

Seven Days of Self-Employment



You ever do something really stupid/awesome? Like quit your job with the goal of somehow making a living from doing the things you love every day? Nah, you wouldn't do that...because you're smart! I, on the other hand, am not.  

Well, in case you were wondering what would go through your mind if you were to toss stability out the window and cling to your creative powers for a living you are in luck.  




Day One

You are filled with creative zest and vigor. The world is your oyster--or something like that. You've grabbed life by the horns, and doggone it, you're going to teach it a thing or two about being the architect of your own future.



Day Two

Given that you didn't actually accomplish much of anything on Day One, you are now hit with the reality of your lack of consistent income.

Google has become your best friend. You might learn from others who have ventured down this path. You will surely find blog after blog of "How I made 10K My First Month of Blogging." Avoid that nonsense. You are a true artist and you are not looking for a 'get rich quick' scheme.

...but if someone would pay you for your slightly haphazard blog posts, you wouldn't turn it down.



Day Three

You've got 600 'To Do' lists detailing each move you could make to promote your art. You've started three blogs, a Facebook page, Instagram account, Pinterest board, Google + profile, journaled your feelings, called your mother for a pep talk, watched an entire season of Gilmore Girls while you stared at a blank canvas, and reorganized your underwear drawer.

A clear plan of what to do with your life still eludes you.



Day Four

You slept funny the night before. You dreamed someone siphoned all the money from your savings account which reminded you that your mortgage is due next week. You managed to doodle a bit that morning, but then questioned the purpose of life. Is it degrading to sell yourself? Will anyone understand your art?

How will you feed the children?! ...Do you actually have children? Regardless, it feels like something you should worry about.

Your previously abundant creative drive has now withered. Oh, the pressure!



Day Five

Your creativity has not returned.

Think happy thoughts. You are told you are overthinking things. "Just breathe," they say. "Get some exercise. Yoga fixes LITERALLY everything."

At the end of the day, you take note of the peace and quiet in your mind. So. Fricking. QUIET.



Day Six

You are determined to accomplish something tangible. You angrily type away, writing your masterpiece of a memoir. Detailing your childhood and why you are incapable of functioning like a normal human being. Artists are supposed to be damaged and full of angst, right?

You delete your memoir.

You make some tea. You sit in silence. You wallow in a little bit of self-pity.



Day Seven

Why did you quit your job? To do what you love.

Why do you love what you do? Because it is meaningful. It is worth doing.

Are you going to be an overnight success story? Probably not.

Can you be content with maybe accomplishing mediocre success over the next six to twelve months? Yeah, that's probably a reasonable goal to aim for.

You magically start doing things. You turn your music up really loud so you can imagine a montage of your future progress.

Congrats. You survived week one.

I Quit My Job: Now What?


I quit my job. I quit my stable, 8 to 5 office setting job…to be an artist.

Time to panic. Just kidding—kind of.

My first question to myself when making this decision was “What the heck is wrong with you?! Get it together, Kelly!” Then there was this little voice yelling somewhat sarcastically in the back of my mind: “YOLO!”



That voice gets me into trouble sometimes.

In Personality Psychology, I am what is referred to as a “Job Hopper”. I’ve held a total of 13 jobs since I was 15, (and some odd jobs in between). I’ve been a hotel housekeeper, waitress, baker, dental ceramicist, dog walker, cashier, optician, and many more. I’m a model employee when hired, but boredom or anxiety take over fairly quickly and I start plotting my exit. A lot of these jobs were a retail or food/hospitality setting. Minimum wage, no benefits, and high turnover. I attributed my boredom to a general lack of stimulation.  Until my last job on an administrative/finance team in the IT industry.

This setting was fast paced, intellectually stimulating, and had a lot of freedom to learn and grow. The job held my attention for much longer than usual. I loved it. I thought “I’ve finally made it. I am an adult!”



Then I hit a wall. My familiar claustrophobia crept in. At first it is subtle. A general discomfort and propensity to day dream. Then, the irritability began. Tasks I was once indifferent towards became tiresome. Minor inconveniences became a source of anger. Inefficiencies I once desired to correct were unbearable. “Not again,” I thought, but I didn’t give in at first. I fought the urge to move on. The job was great. The people were great. Stable income was a plus. I should like it here, right?

And then I reached ‘Level: F*&% it.' It’s an awesome level.


Filled with unexpected panic attacks at my desk. Restless legs that want to carry me to a dark corner to hibernate.Inability to recharge my internal battery. Displeasure began to seep into my home life.

Discontentment. Hello, my old friend.

In these situations, it’s like the seasons in my mind shift and I can either fight the inevitable change until I become sick with fatigue—or I can go with the flow. It's a little difficult to prevent a season from changing. No matter how hard I might try. 



So, I quit.

Surprisingly, I’ve gotten quite a bit of positive feedback with this transition. Many people are supportive of the creative lifestyle. Those who know your passions want to see you follow your dreams. There will also be quite a few people who criticize the choice. It’s only natural. Why on earth would I give up stability to do art?



My art teacher in high school once gave the advanced classes an exercise in making a living as a professional artist. He had us budget the cost of materials and how much we’d have to charge for each painting/drawing/creative-something to make a profit. I remember the lesson I came away with was “Wow, being an artist would suck.” And that was my mind set for years. People would ask me if I was going to pursue art as a career and all I could say was “No, I don’t want to be poor.”

I refused to call myself an artist for the longest time. Even in the context of a hobby I renounced the artistic title. It appeared to bring with it an intense sort of scrutiny from the outside world. If you say you’re an artist, people want to see what you’ve got. “Prove it,” they say.



I didn’t want to prove anything to anyone. 

Obviously, I have tried to adjust to a more structured environment, but my artist’s heart has other plans for me. Neglecting my creative energy is a cruel sort of malnourishment. I can no longer pretend or wish I am not an artist.

Side note: For those of you who are creative dreamers and you find contentment in traditional careers—I’ve got a lot of admiration for you.

Being an artist means a variety of things. Sometimes, it’s not just about creating works of art. It’s about the way you see the world. The way you take in energy and filter it in your mind. Artists process input and stimuli in a way that creates an end product. Their brains are little creative factories. Random pieces go in—weird, inspiring, mundane, beautiful, horrific, eloquent, and/or confusing things come out; assembled and packaged in a new way. With that being said, we all have the ability to be an artist. 



Not all of it is gold. Not all of it should be shared with the world. I’ve got a lot of duds. They are literally stored in a folder on my laptop called “Duds." Art, writing, poems, songs, recipes, random creations—they’ll never see the light of day. The important thing is that I keep creating. If I don’t, I develop creative constipation. For those of you who are highly sensitive, I’m sure you know the feeling well. It’s like expecting an extrovert to remain silent in a room full of people. You might see their eyelid twitching as they try to control the urge to socialize. Painful to watch. Painful to endure.

In conclusion, I’m an artist. I quit my day job. Now I’m going to figure out how to function and pay my bills before my savings runs dry. Ready and go!
